Stuart D. Bogie - Timeline
I was born and raised in Evanston, Illinois, the younger of two boys in a warm and loving home. My parents gave me every opportunity to study music, and my brother never killed me for making so much racket.
1984 I cofounded the Ultra Violets with friend and neighbor Zak Mastoon, aka Caural. We recorded several singles and 2 EPs. Only a few artifacts of this dark age survive and have yet to be released (hint).
1985 I sought music instruction from Gary Onstad. We discuss the Beatles, Miles Davis, Terrence Trent D'arby, and Led Zepplin knock off hair bands. Gary plays serious clarinet - he studied with Luyben. He also had an 8 track studio, an ESQ-1, and an Alesis drum machine. If I did ok on my clarinet work, I got to record some beats with Gary!
1987 My father buys me a radio shack recording set-up on the condition that I sign an agreement to practice my clarinet. I recorded myself playing the clarinet and well...
1991-1993 I play clarinet for the most hottest youth orchaestra in the world under the direction of Dr. Allen Dennis.
1991 I Cofounded Transmission
1993 I graduated from Interlochen Arts Academy where I met some great artists and learned to play clarinet better. The theory classes with Hugh Floyd were some of my favorite.
1995 At the University of Michigan we get Transmission
going without Zak, but with saxophonist Colin Stetson. After a breif face off he and I decide to become the best of friends.
1997-98 I graduate from U of M and move to San Francisco, with Transmission
. While there I cofound the group Peoples Bizarre with Jess Ivry, Eric Perney, and Sarah Zaharako. Those latter two were recently married so something was working in that group, ha! We recorded the unreleased "Bogie Family Suite" for clarinet and strings.
1999 SF gets a little mellow for me and I go home to Evanston, make 2 records with the help of the young studio EV Productions (www.evproductions.net). The first was entitled NEBES/SEBEN and is based on duality. The second was entitled The Letter Three and is based on ...three-ality...uh. well, you know what I mean. These records are out on Egyptian Brain Surgery and can sometimes be bought or traded for.
2000 While hanging out around Chicago I work with a whole bunch of great musicians including: Matthew Lux, Jason Ajemian, Aram Shelton, Eric Roth, Matt Bauder, Josephine Foster, Tim Daisy, Dave Rempis, Kyle Bruckman, K Kruz, Jason Hunt, Jacob Croegaert, The EV Productions Crew, master persuccionist Nadjib Bahri and many more.
2000 July I move to new york to break into the hot dot com world.
2000 December I move into a railroad apartment with Michael Herbst after getting laid off from my hot new job. Jordan McLean recruits me to join Fire of Space (www.fireofspace.com) and all bets are off!
2001 Through Jordan and cellist Gil Selinger (http://www.gilselinger.com/)I start teaching everywhere I can, from Staton Island to Conneticut. I love it and find I have a unique approach that really clicks with certain students.
2001 Antibalas is short a saxophone for a month and through Michael, Jordan, and Aaron Johnson I get invited to come through and play! I had to learn so much music I couldn't listen to anything but the Antibalas repertoire. Martin Perna, Gabe Roth, and Victor Axelrod all returned from Spain and gradualy gave me their thumbs up and I was in! Before I knew it I was in the Alps playing this funky Fela Kuti music.
2001 Through Dave Alfendari this man named Jeremiah Lockwood called me to play some clarinet for him and we end up talking for hours in the afternoon. We never stopped working or hanging out together.
2002 I founded Volney Litmus with Veronica Cuevas. She started Vee Ron records and we are now on that very mission! The Volney Litmus album is out soon, so soon! (think Feb '07)
2003 I'm on tour a lot and have to stop teaching to make the dates. I produce my first record for someone else - Jeremiah. We have the best time!
2004 still touring. work with Paul Cox and Renata Palercio recording 2 beautiful albums. I fall in love with horn arranging.
2005 still touring. join up with Josh Sitron (composer of Dora the Explorer) and get talked into making a website, ha! Write, record and perform with the FunkeyMonkeys and feel completely refreshed through children's music!
2005 Antibalas tours all year then records with John McEntire in Chicago and pushes the envelope of our music. oh yeah!
2006 I play with the group Celebration (who i meet through producer David Sitek and Martin Perna of antibalas) and loose my head performing with them. I meet up with them a few times on their tours and become addicted to their music. They aim at nothing less than elavation of the human spirit with every note they play.
2006 Jeremiah Lockwood reforms The Sway Machinery featuring Colin Stetson, Jordan MacLean and myself on horns. With this group we perform all over New York - from nightclubs to synagogues. Under Jermiah's remarkable leadership, we have performed in England, recorded 6 soundtracks, and had a full page write up in the Village Voice - all with out a record yet! Jeremiah is force to be reckoned with!
2006 We record Jeremiah's next record, Beyondo's EP, many FunkeyMonkeys tracks and counteless other sessions while antibalas takes the year off - anticapating the release of their next album on anti records. antibalas anticapates anti.
2007 Four months of touring and counteless run-out shows supporting The Antibalas album Security. Record and perform with Celebration, The Foal, The Sway Machinery and the FunkeyMonkeys. Compose and perform music for a few little robotic toys. The Sway Machinery performs their greatest concert to date at the Angel Oransanz center with over 500 people packed into an old temple in the lower east side. The FunkeyMonkeys perform a 34 show run at the Daryll Roth theater in Union Square. Members of antibalas play for extensive creative development/choreography sessions with director Bill T. Jones. The Beyondo 3 song set is mixed by Hernon Santiago and produced by Paul Cox and myself - we finaly have it mastered!
